Dangers of Button Batteries

A couple left their home for their weekly dinner night at their favorite restaurant. They both sensed that something was not right, at home that is. They ate quietly and after desert they drank their coffee and make conversation. On the way home they talked about spring cleaning, spring was presently around the corner and it remain, as usual, a chore to prepare and organize for the summer fun once the work done around the house.

They ambled into the house and, John went directly to his office, he loved to check his email messages and then started to work. June went into her bedroom to replace her clothes into something comfy. Nonetheless June could smell a strange smell, she walked downstairs to John office as he was now buried, not with paper work, but buried deep inside his computer. When June came into his office, John glanced up while June inquired if he smelled anything?

He did get a whiff of something, and it did smell like smoke, he speculate if there had been a forest fire close by, or a neighbor starting a fireplace, although the smell seemed to direct him into their kitchen. Then appeared to direct him to one of their kitchen draws, at the moment John could see smoke coming from it, it was coming from the junk draw. I lay a wager that the majority of everyone still has a junk draw, I do, my parents did, and it has become a tradition for many of us, to still have a junk draw. My ex-husband has one, however he is anal, and thus his draw is labeled and organized. I had to laugh when he told me that, I mean what is the point? A junk draw should be somewhat messy in my minds eye.

John hurriedly pulled open the draw and a fire progressed dead on in their kitchen draw, John heaved the draw out and promptly threw it into the sink and discharged water on it. Subsequently he recognize it was developing from a pack of loose batteries, these batteries where button batters. At this point for everyone’s information the instructions state, “Keep the button batteries inside their original container.” This couple was extremely lucky…many people are not.

Within Emergency room all around the country there are major dangers to small toddles and little children. For some bizarre reason they love to swallow button batteries, it was featured on the ABC’s Nightly News as part of a segment on the serious dangers of these button batteries, maybe back last summer. See attachment of video to watch the two shows located on the links below.

Generally babies and young children unfortunately get pleasure from placing and eating foreign objects and inserting in their ears, nose, or simply swallow coins. On the whole we don’t notice everything, especially if you have more then one child; we have a hard time study every move our child makes. Come across the singing gift cards that grandma might have sent to baby Sammy, accordingly you let him listen and play with his card. After that, without you seeing Sammy become aware of the button battery inside the card, therefore what does Sammy do? Yes he eats it. Yet, this is can be fatal in some cases and they are so small, flat and round it’s just extremely easy for them to swallow this object.

Have faith in me when I tell you this object can get stuck in the child’s esophagus or trachea and by the point in time you notice it, it might be its too late. Button batteries are situated in many products, and whilst you’re assessment about this, remember these batteries are lithium button batteries that we are discussing here. Without hesitation, something this treacherous, as you now know, can and will in-fact kill tissue and create a hole in the esophagus or trachea? These holes can develop in scarcely two hours and be able to lead to significant illness or death. Button batteries bring about such peril to kids including; choking and tissue damage. Button batteries are seriously problematic because, often, when a child swallows or chokes on one of these small objects, the parents are not in view to witness this act.
If you’re thinking that your child has swallowed a button battery, or has inserted one in his/her nose ear and month get medical attention right away. Button battery is easy to notice when given an X-ray. Also clean out that junk draw and look for button batteries that might be loose, and place these object in a high place, out of the reach of children.
