The Motel Children

HOMELESS CHILDREN LIVING IN THE WEALTHIEST COUNTY IN THE UNITED STATES; THE MOTEL CHILDREN

Homeless children stuck living in Motels in the Wealthiest area, this was a main topic on a HBO special I saw. This happens to be some of the poorest kids living in one of the richest counties in the nation. One in 40 children experience homelessness in America each year, this is a hub about the area I grew up in, Orange County California, located between San Diego and Long Beach which backs up to Los Angeles. Orange County is a place where the wealthiest people live. It’s not about who you are, how you feel, it’s all about what you have; cars, boats, big houses on the bay, not to mention having your own boat slip, money rules in this community and when you are raised this way it’s how you regard the world, I was outraged and offended to learn about this now, I am shaken to know about these children, who live among the richest people in the world.

A small apartment cost fifteen hundred up to, two thousand a month, the motel is only $850.00 per month. They wash their close in the bathtub, they call themselves survivors. Hope School is a public school tor grades K-8 with 67 students and 3 classrooms. It is open year round to keep the homeless kids in school. These children need more TLC then other kids, they wear the same clothes for 30 day and nobody will make fun of them there. These are children that are transients, they live in shelters or motels, the buses pick them up wherever they might move, this way they stay in the same school.

Scores of Orange County’s motel kids live within walking distance of Disneyland…but few have been inside. As a former employee of Disneyland, this dirty secret seems swept under a rug, how could I not know about this? This repulses me that I have been deficient in a haze, for me to not see such depravity lurking on my front door, shame on all of us, shame on or government, who in the world could allow this to continue? No excuses about anyone’s lack of knowledge about this, you know about now if you have read this hub.

When I ponder how much food Disney prepares each day and how so much is tossed away while just steps away are hungry children. This is American folks, I have become aware of many of the families are of Mexican descent, they work in the hotels along the stripe; maids, waitress, banquets, as there are also many big hotels in that area, and I have seen the cheap rundown motel on the corner of Harbor and Katella.

These motels are also where the gangs live; these small children know all the gang lingo and terms as well as hand signals. Whilst a seven year old was asked what his wish would be if he could wish for anything? He said, “I would change my life.” In one case the mother makes about eight hundred every two weeks working the night shifts at a hospital, and Dad recently lost his job at Target. They seen to all be overweight because they eat such bad foods, for dinner they ate left over pizza and pasta mixed together.

The motel is cramped with bunk beds along with the large mattress in the middle, they all pray someday for a real house, the oldest is a ten year old and she does the entire responsibility to clean, cook and help her brothers and sister, this is so wrong. The kids are talking about guns and shootings plus the children know where the drug dealers hide their drugs and sometimes they steal them. In school second, third and fourth graders share the same room and one teacher. At night the police are regularly summoned to the motels. On one night, they are responding to a 911 complaint of domestic violence. The night world is prostitutes, gangs, fights and the children are still outside playing in the parking lots.
Each and every one of the children are bit every night countless by bed bugs; the motel will pull the mattresses out and leave them leaning against the wall for a few days, then but back into the rooms, the children say the bed bugs are still in the beds. Each family has numerous dogs, plus many of the household’s have lots of children living in these one room motels. There are walls, only four wall no privacy for the adults or the children. Many of the children have juvenile records for burglary charges and other offenses. One boy says he does it for attention.

Some days the kids of all ages spend time in the large trash cans looking for food or toys. About once a week a family is evicted. What they leave behind is put into the motel dumpster. A young boy about six years old, found a gun, looks like a magnum, he was so excited and he didn’t want to share his prize find, he then stuck the gun down his pants on the waist area pulling his shirt over it to conceal the weapon. He soared out of the trash bin, he rounded a corner and pulled out his gun pointing it and everyone, he finally threw the gun up in the air, it landed on the tar parking lot and slide under some cars, then he took off running.

All the children living in this high traffic area can see the Disneyland signage; you can see the Mont-areal moving from the Disney Hotel to the Park, the sign says, “The Happiest place on Earth.” I would bet that none of the children in those motels have ever been inside the Disneyland Park…?
Mothers, that are crack addicts shriek at each other in the parking lot, the kid hide from view in the trash containers until mom comes to get them, they are loaded down with lots of old toys, books, food, and items of interest them.

The state pays for them to have food at the school, it is junk food, and the teachers say they would never eat the food they offer to these children! These children have a strong probability of failure once they grow and become part of a community, they have learned function to in homeless milieu, in addition they are; scared, mean, and these children often witness violence and untimely deaths. On this day one of the children goes to his mother’s funeral, her boyfriend who stayed with them in their motel room killed his mother whilst he witnessed a murder suicide…the little boys in school all want a gun, because it is cool to have a gun.

These kids walk to the stores and hang out at night in the streets and parking lots surrounding Disneyland, this is the playgrounds of the motel kids. They are an easy target for predators’ looking for young boys or girls; they roam freely around at all hours. The good news is that they can watch the fireworks everyday in the summers, and in the winter every week-end. You never see parents with them, they roam around in groups of all ages, from young to older while their parents are back in the motel room stoned out of their mind or working two jobs.

Many very young children have stories of being sad, they talk about living in cars, watching their moms get beat up, a man just walked into their room one night and started to beat his mother to death. Accordingly loads of heartbreaking stories. They stand in line with the homeless at the soup kitchens, when asked if they liked the food, they reply it’s not very good, but it’s something to eat…
In School one family of children are so happy, they are moving to Riverside County and are going to live in a house with their aunt and mother, they are walking around school so excited telling everyone they are moving into a house. Some of the children start to cry, a poignant moment for the children left in the wake of such good news.

This is therefore deplorable and since this was where I worked right there at Disneyland, how many times did I drive down those streets, I by no means saw even a glimpse, I by no means knew this sort of anguish and sorrowfulness is close the eyes to of so many citizens of Orange County. This plight of these motel children, they have head lice, the children are extremely angry and they are children of our future…some have no place to go. For each and every one of you who have read this hub, pay attention to the children and elders in your surroundings. This is a shame, shame on our system; most of us are only one pay check from living in the streets. Peace and Love
