Famous Hotels & Poker Rooms - Cripple Creek History, the Famous Gold Rush Days
Cripple Creek is located in the Colorado Rocky Mountains up in the South West region of the state. It’s located about one and a half hour from the Front Range of Colorado Springs. The ride to Cripple Creek, from the springs, is breathtaking no matter what season, or what the weather is. The town of Cripple Creek and the roads to get to it sure has changed since 1992 when this historic town was voted in as a location to originate a gambling community by the voters of Colorado. I lived up in this most unique place for eleven years, there was no doctors, one gas station, no grocery stores, This town is just a smidgen short of 10,000 feet in elevation, and at that time everyone smoked cigarettes. This is my story about the Wild Wild West.
Approximately a ten minute drive from Cripple Creek is a town called Victor Colorado, the ride to this insignificant town was a step windy ride, once you pulled into Victor you could see a few houses with their matching out-houses. The stores and the local bar were the main attractions. Then on the other side of Victor is the old Train Station, the ghost of old and motionless train cars leaning to their side, with plants and bushes growing out of them. The cover of the station was just suspended by shear will power. I would park and walk around this place, and tried to visualize the congregation of people that arrived here during the late 1800’s.
The train arrived, leaving from Colorado Springs, up to victor every few hours, at one point in time this was largely the most populated site in the west, “The Gold Rush” where a large amount of people were becoming very rich. The ladies of night were arriving daily to work in the most famous houses in Cripple Creek. People had to make their way from Victor into Cripple Creek, there ought to have been people with horses and buggies ready to charge the new arrivals’, for rides like today’s taxi services. Perhaps people selling horses and asses to carry their goods.
Each miner had an ass, the generations of the asses had always had the free openness of Cripple Creek, even in 1992, the story goes like this; the donkey’s are the old souls of the minors, and each summer they still have there historic donkey Day Race. One and all were arriving to Victor via train to jump on this exciting generation that had reached global proportion.. There are plentiful stories of gun fights and famous legends that are notwithstanding a gorgeous component of the historic history of Cripple Creek. However, Victor was the first town in the United States to have electricity and once carefully planned to be the Capital of Colorado, for the reason that the population of folks arrived from all over the world was plentiful.
The whole town of Cripple Creek, burnt down in late 1800’s, I saw pictures of thousands and thousands of tents. Rows and rows of tents, furthermore the mining was not allowed in the city limits, so the people went to work and rebuilt this famous town. The house I owned in Cripple Creek was built in 1889, and on the property was an original shack home, which was the location where the miners lived, and then over many years a room was added here and there.
A friend of mine in Cripple Creek, Freddie, had lived there before the casinos came to be, he showed me his home, and various old homes had trap doors, and when the miners would come home after mining all day, exhausted and dirty they started to dig under their homes you could find old tunnels and some of the tools they used. Again, the motivation for this, was mining in the city limits was forbidden. So they would mine subterranean, under their house.
Most of these people are our relatives from long ago, while visiting my Grandmother in New York City, before she died she handed me a box of letters. She had saved these letters from her mother and father and all their family and parents, cousins, during the days when America was developing into this multifaceted and mysterious world we have fashioned. I was walking in the very shoes of one of my Ancestors’, Art Star.
Currently, the entire casino’s had to be built in the ‘historic method’, the town is said to be haunted, and I know that is true, as a non believer I had a few really chilling creepy events happen. Once, when the contractors started building knocking down old buildings and replacing them with the casino’s it seems to of steered up dust and the souls that sought to be left alone. I rented a house, from my home in California, site unseen; I had no impression what I was in for.
I endured a month before them overs to arrive after I was their, nobody wanted to take their truck up to this high mountain, called Pikes Peak, through windy roads, it reminded me of the movie, “The Shinning.” So without hesitation, I have this house, thou no furniture I looked out over Linda Goodman's home. She is the Author of Sun Sign books and Love Signs. I went around town and introduced myself to all the individuals she talked about in her book, it was absolutely surreal. I moved their on July 4th. Sitting alone on the floor of this empty house, out of the blue, I heard someone whisper in my ear, for a moment, I sat there very still to make sure, then this whisper turned into a tune, and old fashion song, I jumped up so fast grabbed my car keys and slept in my car. I was scared to death.
I am a beach girl, by no means, I never left Southern California before, other than the job offer was too electrifying to resist. I had never seen a winter, other then gray sky’s and some rain. Conceivably, a warm sweater was all I owned. As far as shoes, A! I had so many really cute shoes, and countless awesome suits from working as a manager at Disneyland. Promptly, I arrived in the first winter for the casinos of Cripple Creek, all I could see was cranes and building, contractors, and it was a sight to see, the beginning of something. I lived in Cripple Creek for an entirety of Eleven years, although, once you live up in the mountains, it’s hard to ever leave.
